Palenque Mal de Amores
About
Palenque Mal de Amor unfolds as an immersive gateway into the cultural and material universe of mezcal, rooted in Santiago Matatlán—widely recognized as one of the epicenters of its production. More than a distillery, it operates as a living landscape where process, territory, and tradition intersect.
At the heart of the experience is the palenque itself, where every stage of mezcal production is made visible: from the harvesting of agave to cooking, fermentation, and distillation. Visitors are invited to move beyond passive observation, engaging directly through guided tastings—often including a wide range of artisanal expressions—and conversations that contextualize mezcal within its Denomination of Origin, diversity of agaves, and production methods.
The experience extends outward into the surrounding territory. Through curated routes and formats such as the Barritour—a barrel-shaped vehicle that traverses agave fields—guests are introduced to a more dynamic, communal dimension that blends ritual, landscape, and local traditions.
Palenque Mal de Amor does not frame mezcal as a product to be consumed, but as a system to be understood—one shaped by land, craft, and collective memory.
